INDOT Reminds Motorists: Work Zones Need Drivers' Undivided Attention
4/20/2010

KOKOMO PERSPECTIVE

Federal Recovery Act funding is combining with the fifth year of the Major Moves highway program to build about 800 road construction projects across Indiana during 2010. This record-breaking level of road construction requires Hoosier motorists to be increasingly vigilant when driving across the state this spring, summer, and fall. Indiana is participating in Highway Work Zone Safety Awareness Week April 19 through April 23, and joining with other states to remind motorists that "Work zones need our undivided attention." Last year more than 700 people were killed in work zone crashes nationwide, and four out of five of those killed are drivers or passengers, not highway workers. According to the latest crash data, Indiana's work zone crashes - including those that involve injuries - declined during 2009 to 2,255 from a previous 2,390 recorded in 2008. However, fatal crashes within work zones have increased over the past two years to 10 in 2009. Link
