HOBART -- Construction work to convert the shuttered Hobart Middle School into a municipal police, court and community center could start as early as the spring and take less than a year, officials say. The Hobart Board of Public Works approved the design phase of the project last week and green-lighted planners to move forward with seeking bids. The completed building, which already houses the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and other youth recreation activities, would eventually also alleviate space constraints for the police and court system. The new building would provide the police department much-needed interview space, police officials have said. The plans also create separate entrances for the Hobart City Court, which currently has no option but to transport handcuffed detainees through the same halls with the public and City Hall staff. The project's total price tag will be about $7 million, which will be paid for with bonds. Link
