EVANSVILLE -- Tri-State residents have been lobbying for a direct highway link between Evansville and Indianapolis for more than 50 years. Today, construction of the first section of Interstate 69 is under way. Last month, Gov. Mitch Daniels pledged to complete the first three sections of I-69 by 2012. That's three years ahead of an earlier schedule - and it came with a promise to do so for less money. How will the state pull it off? Samuel Sarvis, the Indiana Department of Transportation's deputy commissioner for major programs, appears this week on Newsmakers, a weekly public-affairs television program co-produced by WNIN-PBS9 and the Courier & Press. Sarvis is overseeing the construction of a 68-mile stretch of I-69 between Evansville and the Crane warfare center in Martin County. Link
